|Pyxis Explorer Scout Unit|
Explorer Scouts are the 4th section of the Scout movement and are aged between 14 and 18 years old. Explorer Scout units are managed by the District not the Group. Although we are not part of Ockendon Scout & Guide Group we have close ties with you, as 1st Ockendon Scouts are one of our feed troops and we hold our unit meeting in your HQ on the 1st Thursday of each month from 20:00/22:00. We also use your HQ for an activity evening on the 5th Thursday of the month if there is one.
The unit started in January 2005 as the Aveley, Belhus & Ockendon Explorer Scout Unit and met at Belhus Park Scout Group’s hall in Faymore Gardens. Unit members at the time chose the name. The unit is named after a star constellation, Pyxis (Compass). Pyxis was once part of the Argo constellation. It was named Malus, the Latin word for mast. In the 17th century, its name was changed to Pyxis, which means “compass” in Latin.
